Larry Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board
Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is exiting the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just days after a collection of emails between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became public.
Summers remarked in a release that he was "appreciative for the opportunity to have served, optimistic about the potential of the organization, and look forward observing their advancement".
The former Harvard president, who once headed the Ivy League institution, declared on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his relationship with Epstein.
Message Exchange
The recently released communications revealed that Summers corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the day before the financier's 2019 apprehension for alleged trafficking of young people.
In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company stated it accepted Summers' determination to resign.
"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the viewpoint he provided to the directors," the organization stated.
Legislative Background
This announcement comes after the entire Congress of the legislative branch voted on Tuesday to endorse a bill that would require the federal prosecutors to make public its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.
The legislation will then move to the desk of US President Donald Trump for approval. He has said he plans to sign the legislation, after reversing his view on the subject following pressure from his supporters.
Correspondence Findings
A group of financier-linked emails disclosed by the Congressional committee days ago included several well-known personalities in the billionaire's former circle, without indicating any illegal behavior by those people.
The communications showed that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with the billionaire often trying to link the official to prominent international personalities.
Individual Statement
After the emails were made available with the general audience, he stated he assumed "full responsibility for my ill-advised judgment to maintain interacting with the financier".
He continued that he wanted "to reestablish confidence and repair relationships with the individuals nearest to me".
Previous Positions
The professor held leadership roles under Democratic administrations; serving as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as head of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.
He presided over the institution from 2001 to 2006 and continues to be a faculty member there. When announcing his withdrawal from public roles earlier on Monday, he said he would maintain his academic responsibilities.
Additional Consequences
Following the economist's statement on Monday, the policy organization, a liberal research organization in the capital where he was a senior fellow, announced that Summers was ceased to be connected with the group.
He became part of the directorate of the technology firm, which creates the language model, in 2023 - following a defeated move to replace its CEO the company leader.
