‘Every minor detail – execute them’: Guruzeta’s journey from gurney to success with Athletic Bilbao
Whenhe debut appearance the Spanish forward played in English soil, an young appearing for the youth squad against German opponents at the English ground in fall 2015, he scored. The second time he appeared in England, against Sunderland weeks after, he netted. The third time, against Pep Guardiola’s team not long later, sure enough, he repeated the feat. Upon his comeback to Manchester to take on Manchester United at the sports complex in the 2017 season, he scored again. It was a superb volley, as well. “Actually,” he states, “it ranks among my finest I’ve netted.” Thus the club did what was necessary: he was replaced.
“I got well angry,” the attacker reveals, before breaking into laughter. “There must be a video somewhere. We traveled to face United and I was pretty good. They kept me out of the latter period: my contract wasn’t finalized deal, goals were flowing, there were lots of rumours, you know how it is. I’m unsure regarding Newcastle being interested, but I came across reports about the Red Devils, the typical thing. It’s unclear how true it was, but even if they had called, I would have wanted to stay at Bilbao. It’s a privilege.”
La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph
At the facility, Bilbao, the early training is ready to commence; post-session, the short journey to the airport and another trip to Britain, this time to take on the Magpies in the UCL on the upcoming match. Uttering the name brings a smile to his face. This is proving a difficult season for Athletic, due in part to the requirements of their participation. Defeated late on in the weekend clash, they have won only one of their recent league fixtures and lost against Arsenal and the German side in Europe. Yet, consider the broader view, the major occasions he’s experienced and future challenges, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation within him.
In the 36 months since he had come back to Athletic, the striker has been a final four contender in Europe, denied at the last hurdle a domestic final by the English giants, and has traveled on a traditional boat through the waterway flanked by a million fans after securing the Spanish cup, the first title in four decades. Now he is Athletic’s top scorer in the European competition, where they are countercultural and debuting in a decade. “This was beyond my dreams,” he says.
He considered it difficult enough just to earn a spot and that proved true. As the child of the one-time rival player the former professional and a regular attendee at the team he now opposes, Guruzeta is from the Antiguoko academy, the local academy that nurtured the Arsenal manager, Xabi Alonso and Andoni Iraola. His move to Athletic came at seventeen but after his top-level debut in August 2018, he suffered a ACL injury, being released, a drop in category and a recall before he could truly get a chance, coming back aged 26 to experience the peak of their lives.
“Joining the setup thinking you won’t reach the senior squad but each step you progress through you’re still there and you can notice the proximity. You make it and … you’re sent away.” He featured briefly in six matches in a handful of matches between his first game and February 2019. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches there and I suffered the ACL injury.
“A massive setback but I look back on it as something positive because it made me change the way I saw things. The rehabilitation process is challenging, but it helps. You cultivate routines you didn’t have. Previously I was casual, but I would go to training and then return home, like when you’re a kid. In the facility, all resources are available, so utilize it all. Work, precaution. Hit the weights. Should your hips be uneven, address that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, improve it more. Every small aspect: perform them.
“In the first team you’re going to crash into players who have experienced contact 200,000 times. They’re so strong. I look at photos of me before: my physique was slight. So what happens, happens. Present-day images and the improvement is clear. Recovery revealed that. Training finishes, but there’s more to do. Teammates are set, really ready; the same applies.”
Minutes are crucial. He left in tears in the pandemic season, in his early twenties, moving to a lower level. With Sabadell in that season, he scored three times in numerous matches. At Amorebieta in the second half of 2021-22, the goals started to flow. “Players go through it: transfers, releases. With a turnaround, dedication, confidence, and should the time come the requirement appears for your role, recall is possible. You have to be ready. When they decided to call again, an aspiration fulfilled. To then win the Copa del Rey, European football, and make the UCL … pfff.”
No wonder he says savor the moment. Especially after the prior campaign which, on occasions, was about endurance. After being leading scorer with a high tally, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
